I found the yarn shop easy enough. The lamppost, flowerpot, and bench out front were all covered in colorful knitted casings. In Seattle this was a form of craft activism that we called yarn bombing, and it was done by random guerrilla knitters. In Destiny Falls, I was told it was the calling card of the Ladies Adventurous Knitting Club. I hoped I wouldn’t be called to knit a covering for a lamppost!

The sign above the shop read Knitty Gritty, and the logo was a colorful ball of yarn with two knitting needles sticking out of it. I expected a typical small-town yarn shop, but when I stepped inside the door I was bombarded with an explosion of colorful wool. Shelves, baskets, and bins of it covered every square inch of the surprisingly large shop. The arrangement was artistically brilliant, with a rainbow of colors flowing through the entire store. The stock was arranged by type of yarn, and then by colors, which blended in delicate swirls from one type to another in a flowing pattern of hues. There were thousands of skeins and balls of yarn. They lined the perimeter and filled the interior of the store on shelves and in wire bins and wicker baskets. It was like an aurora borealis made of wool. I’d never seen anything like it. I just wanted to stand in the doorway and marvel at the magnificence.

“Welcome to Knitty Gritty. I see it is your first time here.”

I looked up to see a woman who seemed familiar. She was a large woman, made to look larger by her brilliantly colored muumuu. She was wearing an elaborate knitted hat with a burst of a colorful tuft on the top. I quickly placed her as one of the knitting club ladies who I’d seen at Vessie’s Café.

“Hello! Yes, it’s my first visit. This shop is stunning!” I spread my arms and gestured around the amazing display. “I could stand here all day just looking at it.”

She burst out with a deep, throaty laugh. “Do not do that. I cannot make a living from sightseers.”

“Is this your store?” I asked her.

“Ya. It is. And was my mother’s before me. Bless her soul. I am Olga. How can I assist?”

“Hi, Olga. I’m Hayden. I’m a brand-new member of the kitting club. I joined because …I… wanted to …um… take up knitting.” Ug. My grandmother and her brilliant ideas. Now I was stumbling and stuck.

“Ah!!!” Her applause and loud outburst startled me. “Wonderful! Let us begin then. What do you have?”

“I have nothing, actually. I’m starting from scratch.” I looked around the vast room. In addition to the yarn, there were pattern books and needles of every size and type. “I don’t even know where to begin.”

“Olga is here to the rescue!” She began to bustle around the shop. “We start with the hardware, then we shall pick the wool.”

By the time Olga was done with me I had three different sizes of knitting needles, plus four different crochet hooks.
